John 2:1-12
All of Jesus’ miracles point to who He is and what He came to do – showing us a
deeper reality of how things came to be and even a glimpse of heaven coming down to
earth. In John 2, we see Jesus perform his first miracle by turning water into wine at the
wedding in Cana. One thing that really stands out to me within this chapter is where the
master of the feast said in verse 10 “Everyone brings out the choice wine first, then the
cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you saved the best till
now.” Not only did Jesus turn the water into wine, but He turned it into the BEST wine.
He didn’t just do what he had to do to get the job done. He made THE BEST wine and
He made AN ABUNDANCE of it – meaning they had more than they ever needed.
Jesus didn’t do the bare minimum. He went above and beyond what was needed. How
much more true is this in how He works within our lives - if we choose to follow Him? He
wants the absolute best for us, often exceeding all the expectations we could ever have.
I found this to be very convicting. Who am I that the highest King wants this for me? I
am an underserving sinner, yet he loves me and chooses me still despite my capability
to stray away from him time and time again.
How many times are we going to allow ourselves to fall into the same sin? Telling
ourselves that it’s not that bad or that it’s not truly sin. But oh friend, it is! If you are
having to convince yourself that its “not that bad”, you are walking on a tightrope of sin,
just waiting to see how close you can get before falling into the canyon below. Why risk
your life when there is a perfectly good bridge on the next ridge over? The bridge might
be a hike to get to, but it will teach you patience, trust and endurance along the way.
Friend, don’t settle for the tightrope when Jesus is offering you so much more.
